Think about this: Have you ever walked into any company’s office and seen that the marketing department took up 90% of the square footage? And yet over-whelmingly, when people think they need to hire a business coach or consultant (the difference being the inclusion of implementation assistance with the consultant), they are thinking 100% about getting help with marketing.

And when it doesn’t work? Their solution is to seek more or better marketing. Never does it occur to them that the problem is that they don’t have a company around their marketing efforts.

So criteria number one for being ready for a business consultant is that you know that a company is more than just a product or service and marketing to promote it.

Number Two…

Criteria number two would be that you actually want a company. Maybe what you really want is freedom over your time, but you had the misfortune of being born without a trust fund. There is training that can certainly help you, and it focuses on creating passive income, or what is often called a freedom business. (I offer online training courses on my Freedom Business Launchpad to help those people who are wanting that.)

But you don’t need a full-fledged business process and systems to help you achieve goals with that process if all you want is to set up a passive revenue stream. You really just need to learn to make and market those sorts of products. This is the one area of business in which nothing but products and marketing can really take you about 95% of the way to success.

Not every business can be run as if it was a passive income generator, though. If there is a service you long to provide, you are going to need to be trading hours for dollars. At some point you may be able to leverage the hours of others, so that you are making dollars for hours you aren’t personally working. If that’s your goal, so much more the need for you to develop an actual business model around your offerings.

That you want to build and run a business, and want help doing so according to best practices or with some unique experience, skill set or perspective your consultant can contribute, is the second criteria for being ready for a consultant. Moreover, you expect an “expert” to be able to provide you with concrete measurements for what acceptable progress looks like, and a clear system for evaluating their performance as you work together.

Lastly, you should hire a consultant if you believe in the value of what you are doing enough to be willing to invest cold hard cash in ensuring your success at it.

I always say, “You didn’t teach yourself to read, so why would you expect to teach yourself how to run a successful business?” Clearly people can’t teach themselves this, as evidenced by the fact that so many people fall for the label “business coach” being used by marketing coaches.

Now there is an aspect to this that is just about dollars and cents. If you knew for certain that for every dollar you invested in business development consulting services you would increase revenue by 5 dollars, you couldn’t invest enough money. You’d do that all night and day, if you’re smart. It’s simply math.

It’s more complex than that because: A) You don’t know for sure what the return on your investment will be (which is why clear deliverables are so important); and B) You may not know for sure that you deserve to be more successful than you currently are.

You read that right. The biggest obstacle to most people taking the step of hiring the help they need when by all measures it is clearly what they need, is that they aren’t comfortable with a life that looks radically different from their current life. And that is because they aren’t up to speed with how it will feel to live a bigger life.

Until within yourself you can hold the immensity of Spirit’s vision of you, how can you take the steps that would move you into living that vision? You have to not only see it before you can live it, but FEEL it before you can allow it.

With a background as a psychotherapist, clearly I’m aware of quite a few reasons why a person might have such internal blocks to success. I won’t try to cover them all at the end of what is already a fairly long article. But let me just say that if you want to be free from those inner hindrances, one of the most productive places for you to focus is on the importance of the impact you are trying to create and the evidence of your competency with the needed skills to create that impact that can be found by taking a look at what you have already done.

So if you have a block there, start there. Make sure you believe in the vision of your business, in its importance. And know that you are worthy of that. Hundreds of thousands of unlicensed tax preparers renewed their PTINs in advance of the testing start date, obtaining the ability to prepare tax returns without demonstrating their competency. People who obtain provisional PTINs have until December 31, 2013 to pass the Registered Tax Return Preparer (RTRP) Exam.

The IRS rolled out RTRP exam some time ago, and once the exams started the IRS stopped issuing provisional PTINs. Only people who pass the exam can use the RTRP designation. Just like Enrolled Agents (EAs), the IRS maintains a list of people who hold the RTRP designation as well, so you can check to see if your preparer is licensed. Right now there is no searchable online database, but the IRS says one is coming soon.

The RTRP exam only covers series 1040 tax returns. Those PTIN holders who swear they will not prepare series 1040 tax returns will still be able to prepare other kinds of tax returns with out demonstrating their competency to prepare those other kinds of tax returns, as the IRS has not created exams for those other kinds of tax returns and may not do so for some time to come.

How many RTRPs are there now? The Member Connect portion of the National Society of Accountants Web site reported that as of late September 2012, the Return Preparer Office of the IRS had issued 20,514 certificates to new RTRPs and the total number of people who still needed to pass the competency exam was 327,000. Those provisional PTIN holders are not breaking down the doors to prove they know what they are doing; since licensing started, only 6% of provisional PTIN holders have bothered to get licensed.

What do you need to know to protect yourself?

If your paid tax preparer does not have a PTIN and refuses to sign with one, you need to be very suspicious; they are breaking the law.

Even if your paid tax preparer has a PTIN, but they do not have a license, such as an EA, or RTRP, they have not demonstrated their competency to prepare your individual tax return. All provisional PTIN holders can prepare any tax return through 2013; sure, they are supposed to know what they are doing, and can lose their PTIN if they wind up in front to the IRS for doing a bad job, but that will not help you, after the fact.

Remember, if you have other kinds of tax returns you need prepared, and if you want to be sure the tax preparer has demonstrated some competency to prepare that kind of tax return, you will want to hire an EA, the tax specialists, or CPA or attorney who specializes in tax issues. An RTRP or unlicensed PTIN holder has not demonstrated competency to prepare these other kinds of tax returns can still do so; again, even an unlicensed tax preparer is supposed to know what they are doing, and can lose their PTIN if they wind up in front to the IRS for doing a bad job, but that will not help you, after the fact.

You are the one signing that the tax return is true and correct to the best of your knowledge; you will be responsible for whatever your tax preparer does with your tax return.

7 Local Newspaper Advertising Tips

We are all becoming increasingly immune to many forms of advertising, including local newspaper advertising. So to be an effective marketing tool for small businesses, newspaper ads need to overcome that immunity by being eye-catching, interesting and different.

Bad advertising will be lost among the other ads on the page and get overlooked by the very people you want to attract.

Good advertising will do the opposite. It will stand out from the rest of the advertisements and get your product or service noticed. More importantly it will encourage people to take action and contact you.

Here are 7 tips to take to help your newspaper advertisements to get past that immunity:

1. Use a bold, broken border

Placing a bold, broken line around your ad will make it look like a coupon which will attract attention.

2. Focus on just one product or service at a time

A newspaper advertisement should sell just one product or service. It should not be an exhaustive list of everything you do or a statement which says something like “all types of work undertaken”. People are looking for a specific answer to a specific problem, not a ‘jack of all trades’. If you want to tell people about all the products or services you offer, run a different ad each week, or perhaps a series of ads all the same week in the same place on several pages of the same newspaper.

3. Start with a headline

It never ceases to amaze me how many small business advertisements start with the name of the business, which to a potential customer is utterly uninteresting. Instead, start with a big, bold headline that will grab people’s attention…

Buy one get one free
Sale must end Friday
Free installation this month

…and so on.

4. Keep it simple

Unless you are a skilled copywriter, aim to get your message across in as few words as possible and keep images to a minimum. Tell the potential customer what you have to offer, how much it is and how to contact you.

5. Include a reason to act now

Unless you give someone a reason to act now, they probably won’t, so include a limited time offer, or a discount for responding quickly.

6. End with a call to action

At the bottom of your ad include a call to action…

Call today to book
Bring this coupon into the shop for 10% discount

…and so on.

7. Record your results

Don’t make the mistake of not recording the results of your advertising efforts. Ask people how they heard about you and keep records of responses to your advertising. I have never heard of anyone complaining about being asked how they found out about a product or service at the point when they are buying it – so ask. This information will be invaluable when placing new campaigns in the future.
